Staggering Legends of the Inane

A folk tale passed down to me from my great uncle. Lizard and the Patchwork Hills is supposdely the story of farmers in the pre dustbowl era. The tale is a warning of sorts to all those farmers, whose farming practices stripped the land, and whose old houses are now shells on the praire.

When I was fourteen, having missed a bus to downtown Oklahoma City for a library book sale, I tried walking the twelve miles to the old Carnegie Library. After about three miles, an elderly couple in an old pickup truck, the kind with the doors and hood different colors, and the truck bed filled with hay. They let me ride in back and promised to take me downtown. But it seems they forgot, and soon I was out in the country, driving past these extended fields of red flowers. And when they stopped, their house beneath giant electrical towers, they almost sprinted to their house, leaving a trail of paper and peanuts shells behind them.

In southeast Oregon there is legend about a rich resident who secretly imported a Panda to his estate. Of course, it wasnt legal to own a Panda, so when the authorities finally found out about his rare pet they arrived at his gates with their powerful Panda catching gear.  The man who loved his Panda in a very physical way, let the Panda loose into the wild. And while the Panda was never seen by the man again, he would drop packets of tomato juice and tuna fish (the Pandas favorite food) from an ultra light plane he flew to survey his thousands of acres. Some residents in the area, say the Panda mated with local bears and the offspring with their gigantic strength and super cuteness are terribly entertaining and horribly soft and cuddly.

There was a rumor among the people of a small island chain off Alaska about finding a strange collection of watches. The rumor was that a ship carrying a military shipment of experimental equipment wrecked in a storm and dumped much of its cargo into the ocean. A box of the mysterious military cargo landed on an abandoned fishing island and wasnt found for ten years. When some locals finally came back to the island, they found the box cracked open, and its content, a wide range of watches were spread out in trees, in caves, half buried in small dirt bunkers, some crushed on rocks, and others appeared to be new and of unknown designs.

All propless and passenger, I found a photocopied children’s story in a bag. I found the bag while stopped at the light two kilometers before this video starts. Also in the bag was a candy bar (mostly uneaten), one battery and enough breath to carry three people up one half a mountain. I assume this story isnt really about giants or roads or weak cardboard homes. Instead this handwritten and photocopied tale in a bag is the history of the galaxy, or at least a few months or so of its grade school days.
